Weather forecast: Sunny, temps in the mid 60s. What we got: Sunny, temps in the mid 60s. Nice!

Wind forecast: One model said E5-10, another said ESE 4-11, and another said E 10 or less. What we got: Not one bit of what was predicted - well unless you take into consideration the "or less" part! Not so nice!

Actually to be accurate, when we set out for a noon start we really were expecting the "or less" part (hence the slightly later than normal start, hoping the wind would develop a little later as one forecast boldly promised). Greeting us in the channel, however was a nice northerly breeze around 12 knots. Which later lightened a little and shifted a bit more westerly as the race progressed. That is until it lightened... and lightened some more, then shifted out of the southwest, and lightening even more. And just when you thought it couldn't get any lighter, well then it lightened some more. And then, well you get the picture.

Fortunately it WAS a beautiful autumn day with the sunshine and the mild and seasonable temps. Unfortunately, the attenuating winds made finishing an impossibility for the majority of the fleet with the amount of current flowing. Kudos to everyone who toughed it out for the afternoon and into the early evening hours only to be scored a DNF for their efforts. Alas, some days are just like that. Nevertheless, it was a fun day, especially early on with the northerly breezes, spinnaker runs, and of course the ritualistic race banter broadcast from every boat (some more than others!)

Race 1 participants who are enriched with a keen sense of observational skills will have noticed that we did not round the Grasshopper Creek nun once this race, already matching last year's total number of races in which we did not visit the familiar red buoy. But will still have 7 races left to try and match last season's 15 roundings of our favorite marker! Will we begin attempting to go for an all time record in Race 2? The only way to find out it to come sailing with us! One thing for sure - odds of us having a different finishing line in many of our future races is quite probable - I think many of us have grown weary of navigating back up the secondary channel to finish a course! See everyone at Race 2!

As always, race results are posted below. Please note that some boats may have a slightly different PHRF number this year. Some of these changes are a reflection of the latest version of the Hi-Lo-Mean handicaps dated September 15, 2011. A link to the PDF for these handicaps is posted below:

If you have any questions regarding your handicap or that of any other's, please do not hesitate to discuss it with me. Thanks!
