The Shackleton Series

Not that Race 7 was all that angelic. The final match of this year's series was an exact replica of its predecessor, pretty much in every form and fashion. The course was another carbon copy and even had the same alternate finish line, which was naturally and mysteriously ignored by the RC again (the RC also has the privilege of writing about themselves in the third person). The wind for Race 8...a virtual no show for the second straight race although the forecast was a little more promising . But after sailing in over 100 of these races throughout the years, we know all about promising forecasts, yet STILL somehow think "the wind is going to fill in any minute now." I guess two things made this race (a little) more bearable than the prior one. First it was a warmer day and there would be no cold points awarded. Secondly, it did have an exciting and close finish for all participants involved.

So without anything else worthy to report about we will go straight to the end of season formalities. Once again we must congratulate the Maniac crew for their victory in this year's series. I think Captain Tim finally felt he had a secure enough distance between him and the 2nd place boat to warrant sitting out the season finale - without fear of the rest of the fleet recruiting random boats at the dock to pad the points of the participants. Or perhaps he just had other obligations to tend to although we STILL cannot figure out what could possibly be of greater priority than sailing in The Shackleton, drifter or not.

Going into the finale, the real battle was for 2nd, 3rd, and Chuck, although it was not as close as first believed. An incorrect data entry into the scoring spreadsheet back at Shack Headquarters had robbed Smoke on the Water of an extra point. (The sun must have been in my eyes when I typed in the points from Race 7, yeah that's it!). Had the Smoke crew known about this prior to the start of today's agonizing battle, they might have chosen to sit this one out, thus sparing the remainder of the fleet (and local lake residents) from having to endure the seemingly thousands of cover versions of Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water shuffling on their stereo system. At least they didn't find this German Polka version of it! But honestly, sitting this race out would not have been a good option as they only had a 2 point lead over third place going in and not a 16 point lead like Maniac had - I do believe we would have found a few extra boats to cover that small of a gap.

Victory today would go to the crew on The Blue Pearl, and Smoke ever so slightly corrected out for 2nd place today. The wind gods were less friendly to the PDQ crew on today's spinnaker run, at one point it seemed they had the race in hand only to later be passed up by the rest of the fleet. Sometimes the wind just likes to play favorites. Still, a fun race today and another great series is behind us. See everyone next year!
