THE SHACKLETON SERIES:
OFFICIAL RACE OF THE INSANE!
Yes, a few folks have already called us that. David Freye countered with the best rationale: "You got deer hunting, sitting in a duck blind, riding in a bass boat at 40 mph (we saw a few of those today), or sailing, which would you prefer?"
When you get down to it though, it really wasn't THAT bad. Yes it was cold and cloudy. And yes, each participating skipper would be awarded an extra cold point. But the wind was not as heavy as predicted and the extra point doesn't really do anybody any good since 8 of the 10 of us who have raced so far were present. A raindrop or two (or were they stray snow flakes?) was felt but really not enough to qualify for yet another point.
I had personally planned to keep warm with a thermos full of hot chocolate but the only thermos I was able to locate at the house came out of a Mutant Ninja Turtles lunchbox (my wife collects some cool things) and the steaming nature of the liquid that would poured in several hours earlier was not retained to the extent that was anticipated. Luke warm - blah!
It was good that Tim talked us into shortening the course to about 10-1/2 nautical miles. The westerly winds were a little tricky and the downwind leg was more of a beam/close reach with a brief run depending on where you were at on the lake. Nevertheless, Andre did his best to make it a downwind leg as he was the only one adventurous enough to fly a spinnaker.
There was some good sailing by everyone today even though the fleet was pretty spread out in this race. Towards the last part of the race the wind took more of a northerly shift and those of us still on the course had to make a few more tacks. Banana Split was able to overcome an excellent start by Maniac to correct out in front - but not my much. 1 Banana Split (2:23:37), 2. Maniac (2:25:15), 3. True Blue (2:48:39), 4. Possible Mallard (2:51:17) were the top finishers. Great job by everyone and it was nice to see we had no mutinies today! We will take a little time off to allow for the holidays. The next race will be January 11. Anyone wanting to join in the insanity is welcome!
