Since I have been lax of late in my duties as Senior Reporter of The Shackleton News Herald Tribune Journal Times Gazette, the following is an excerpt from a Race 3 summary that was submitted to me for possible... uh, ...submission:
"It was a dark and stormy night. Lurking in the inky shadows was a psychopathic madman waiting for the opportunity to catch his next unsuspecting victim by surprise. The detective entered the dimly lit Quonset hut only to discover its inhabitants had mysteriously vanished, having been abducted by aliens. In the distance a dog barked. But I digress..."
This is a brilliant piece of, dare I say, literature? It has all the perfect traits of a typical Shackleton Race report. It establishes mood, grabs the reader's attention by building suspense and depicting imagery, and even balances the fine line between creative writing and outright plagiarism. The latter wasn't really the issue. Stealing another author's words, ideas, or subject matter? I have no problems with that! Rather, the Junior Journalist made a fatal mistake. The above opening text, stuff worthy of a Pulitzer Prize nomination, was quickly followed by some nonsense mumbo jumbo about which boat was on which tack at the start, things like sail changes, wind shifts, the winning boat, blah, blah, blah. That is SO the 2011 technique of race reporting. Today's style is more avant garde and has an abstract and cryptic delivery method. In other words, we are no longer telling you what happened out there. If you want to know that information you need to show up and sail with us! Or at very least, look at the picutres.
That said, anyone taking note of the title photo to this ambiguous post might observe that it is taken from the backside of Hiwassee Island. With that bit of evidence one could assume that the Shackleton fleet made a long overdue circumnavigation of the venerable Island. And by studying the second snapshot contained within this document, one might conclude that we had proper wind to achieve this task. One would be correct in both assumptions. For the third straight race, we had some nice wind to work with - this of the cooler, northern variety but there were no complaints. It was indeed an excellent day to go for a sail, let alone make a trip upriver to view and listen to the sandhill cranes on the Hiwassee River.
We would like to congratulate today's second place finisher, David Barrow on board The Blue Pearl. However, since daughter Olivia IS the official captain of the boat (on board or not), perhaps full credit should go to her. So to David, never mind. Congrats Olivia! And just in case you are thinking that we are now calling 2nd Place the New 1st Place you are WAY behind in the program - we have been doing that for years. Except when the boys from PYC sailed with us - then it was 3rd Place being the New 1st Place. But detailed race report or not, we all know the boat that took 1st place today- the very same boat that did NOT win in the River Drop Regatta earlier this year!
Seriously, excellent race by Maniac and everyone else today. Let's hope our streak of fair winds continues for Race 4! See you there! And maybe, just maybe, we will discover the fate of those Quonset hut inhabitants!
